The Croatian cities of Petrinja, Sisak, and Glina were struck by a powerful earthquake on December 29, 2020. Citizens were left without homes, drinking water, and food, and city streets were buried under debris. It is estimated that over three thousand people lost their homes, more than 2,500 buildings were destroyed, and around 60,000 were damaged.
Immediately after the earthquake, volunteers from other regions arrived in these Croatian cities, bringing food, clothing, and other necessities, while many European countries urgently approved funds for reconstruction and support of the local population.
To help citizens in neighboring Croatia, the humanitarian organization “Bauern Helfen Bauern” from Salzburg initiated and funded a project to build prefabricated houses for families who had lost their homes.
The project is being implemented by the “KDT” Foundation from Sarajevo. In the first phase, 30 units are planned, of which eight are fully completed and ready for occupancy, while two more are in preparation. Connections to infrastructure are also being installed rapidly.
All construction materials for the houses are transported from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the construction team from Bratunac/Srebrenica, together with colleagues from Croatia, can complete all carpentry work on a single unit within five days. After that, work on internal installations, furnishing, and handover of the unit follows.
The “KDT” Foundation operationally implements this project together with “Bauern Helfen Bauern,” and the “Caritas” of the Diocese of Sisak is also involved in the entire project.
